Rate Adaptation for 802.11 Wireless Networks: Minstrel

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Minstrel is a practical rate selection algorithm for commodity 802.11 radios, implemented in the Linux kernel and the ns-3 network simulator. Design of a rate selection mechanism is complicated by the variety of sources of packet loss in 802.11 networks, the difficulty of testing rate adaptation, and interaction with higher layer protocols (especially TCP). Minstrel is based solely on acknowledgement feedback. Consequently, estimates of future success at a given rate are based only on past success ratios at that rate. Minstrel selects rates that will give an approximation to the best available throughput, while delivering packets with the highest probability achievable given link conditions and a constraint on the transmitter time to be spent on any one packet, so as to be friendly to higher layer protocols. If Minstrel fails to achieve communication with a neighbour, it collects good evidence that no communication is possible. Conversely, if communication is at all possible, Minstrel will find rates to use that will achieve the best reliability and close to the best performance avail-

Experimental Study on the Performance of Rate Adaptation Algorithm in IEEE 802.11g Networks

IEEE 802.11 technology provides a low-cost wireless networking solution. In the last few years, we have seen that the demand for high-bandwidth wireless local area networks increases rapidly, due to the proliferation of mobile devices such as laptops, smart phones and tablet PCs. This has driven the widespread deployment of IEEE 802.11 wireless networks to provide Internet access. However, wire...

Enhanced statistics-based rate adaptation for 802.11 wireless networks

Rate adaptation is a common technique to exploit channel diversity in wireless networks. Despite the many rate adaptation algorithms proposed for 802.11 networks, statistics-based schemes remain the most widely adopted approaches in commercial 802.11 products due to their simplicity and practicality. However, statistics-based schemes suffer some disadvantages. Our previous research effort revea...

A Performance Evaluation for Rate Adaptation Algorithms in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Networks

The wireless LAN standards IEEE 802.11 (a/b/g) provides multi-rates capabilities. To achieve high network performance, devices need to adapt their transmission rate dynamically under varying conditions. Rate adaption algorithm is a critical component of their performance, only very a few algorithms have been published and the differences between their mechanisms have been publicly discussed. In...

A Joint Rate and FEC Adaptation Approach to Enable High Speed Broadcast in IEEE 802.11 Networks

Rate adaptation is a MAC-layer mechanism in IEEE 802.11 networks to ensure efficient utilization of constantly varying wireless channel. However, for broadcast communication, most commodity wireless drivers only support the base rates (i.e., 1 or 2 Mbps in 802.11b/b+g and 6Mbps in 802.11a/g), leaving the channel capacity significantly underutilized. In this paper, we present a novel rate adapta...
